2014 Huge Bear Unoaked Chardonnay
THE VINTAGE: In spite of a continued drought in California, the 2014 growing season produced higher than normal yields with excellent quality. Harvest began earlier throughtout the region. The fruit for this Unoaked Chardonnay was harvested on September 4, 2014, less than two weeks after the South Napa Earthquake.
THE CRAFTING: Whole clusters of our Knights Valley Chardonnay went direct to press. The juice was cold settled in tank before being racked off gross lees to another tank for fermentation. Fermentation lasted about 30 days with peak temperatures not going above 55F. The wine was then aged in tank sur lie and mixed weekly to increase the middle palate for just under 6 months.
THE TASTING: The 2014 Huge Bear Unoaked Chardonnay starts with a vibrant nose of minerals, Meyer lemon, fresh white flowers and a touch of crystalized pie crust. In the mouth there are notes of green apple, honey, and lemon/lime. The entry is rich and the flavors continue through a long finish driven by bright acidity and minerality. The finish is savory with a hint of vanilla.
THE PAIRING: A perfect pair with a vegetable terrine.
